A few generations ago, in rural settings, kitchen waste was returned to the soil, nourishing backyard gardens and trees that, in turn, provided fresh food, forming a natural, regenerative cycle. As urban living expanded, this connection gradually disappeared. While composting systems exist today, they often demand outdoor space, time, and maintenance, making them impractical for people living in compact city apartments with fast-paced lifestyles.

Materials were chosen for durability and functionality. Outer body are made of injection-molded polypropylene for sturdiness, water resistance, and lightness, while the trash bucket and inner casing are aluminum, providing strength, heat resistance, and durability.

The planters are removable and separate from the trash can, allowing for easy cleaning, flexible placement, and the cultivation of short-term kitchen-use herbs such as mint, cilantro, basil, oregano, and parsley.

The design of Terraloop focuses to be an integral part of any home. Play of lines, dots and curves combined to create its geometry. Its form is playful and adaptable, allowing it to fit into any space. Inspired by rearrangeable toys, the design encourages interaction and personalization through the user’s choice of plants and arrangement.
